Description
Rose garden is a beautiful place in Chandigarh which is located in sector 16, Chandigarh. In 1967 it was built under the guidance of Mohinder Singh Randhawa, Chandigarh’s first chief commissioner, and named after India’s former president, Zakir Hussain is well-known as Zakir Hussain Rose Garden.
It is a botanical garden that is spread over 30 acres (120,000) of land, with 50,000 rose bushes of 1600 different species. This is the reason, it is known as Asia’s largest garden.
The Roses are planted into beautifully carved out beds that don’t interfere with each other keeping sanctity intact. With every rose or flower, a wooden block is kept which tells about the origin of the rose.
Rose garden is not only famous for Roses but medicinal plants and trees also. Some of the medicinal plants that can be spotted here are bel, Behera, Harar, camphor, and yellow Gulmohar. It is a famous place among children who loves to play in the open area.
Every year a weekly event called the Rose festival is celebrated during the month of February or March. A huge number of Rose variety is shown which attracts a lot of people. There is also a range of other flowers but Roses are the center of attraction. Various events and competitions are held like Photography contests, Miss prince and princess, Rose King and Queen, Floral Hat, Brass Band event, and folk dance between different teams.
If you are planning to visit the Rose garden then the best time is between the winter and spring seasons, that is November to March.
The timings to visit the garden are 6 AM to 8 PM (Mon-Sun).
